About
An obstetrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetricians, also known as OB/GYNs, provide a wide range of services related to women’s reproductive health, including prenatal care, childbirth assistance, and gynecological exams. Obstetricians work with women throughout their pregnancy to monitor the health of the mother and developing fetus, perform ultrasounds and other tests, and manage any medical conditions that may arise during pregnancy. They also provide guidance and education on healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices, and help women prepare for childbirth. During childbirth, obstetricians provide medical care and support to ensure a safe delivery for both mother and baby. They may use a variety of techniques to manage pain, such as epidural anesthesia, and may use instruments such as forceps or vacuum extractors to assist with delivery if necessary. After childbirth, obstetricians provide follow-up care to monitor the health of the mother and baby, and may offer guidance on breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and contraception. In addition to their work with pregnant women, obstetricians also provide gynecological care, including annual exams, Pap smears, and treatment for conditions such as menstrual irregularities, menopause, and sexually transmitted infections. Obstetricians typically complete four years of medical school followed by a residency program focused on obstetrics and gynecology. They may also pursue additional training in subspecialties such as maternal-fetal medicine or reproductive endocrinology.
