About
An optometrist is a healthcare professional who specializes in providing primary eye care services, including vision testing, prescribing glasses or contact lenses, and diagnosing and treating certain eye diseases and disorders. Optometrists perform comprehensive eye exams to assess visual acuity, depth perception, color vision, and overall eye health. They can prescribe corrective lenses, such as eyeglasses or contact lenses, to correct refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In addition to prescribing corrective lenses, optometrists can diagnose and treat certain eye diseases and disorders, such as glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, and conjunctivitis. They may also provide pre- and post-operative care for patients who have undergone eye surgery. Optometrists may work in private practice, retail clinics, or hospitals, and may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as ophthalmologists, to provide comprehensive eye care. To become an optometrist, one must complete a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree program, which typically takes four years to complete after undergraduate studies. After completing their education, optometrists must also pass a national board exam and obtain a state license to practice.
